Adult glaucoma is known as the “silent thief of sight” because it often begins without obvious symptoms and gradually causes damage to the optic nerve due to increased intraocular pressure. If not detected early and properly treated, it can lead to permanent vision loss.
At Dr. Hesham Gharieb’s Clinic, we place special emphasis on early glaucoma detection using the latest devices and technologies. We provide precise treatment plans tailored to each case based on the stage of the disease and the patient’s lifestyle.
What Are the Causes of Adult Glaucoma?
- Increased intraocular fluid pressure due to impaired drainage.
- Heredity: A family history of glaucoma.
- Age: The risk increases after the age of 40.
- Other conditions such as diabetes or severe nearsightedness (myopia)
- Prolonged use of corticosteroids.
The Most Common Types:
Open-angle glaucoma (the most common type)
Closed-angle glaucoma
Secondary glaucoma
Normal-tension glaucoma
Symptoms That May Appear in Advanced Stages:
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision
- Tunnel vision
- Blurred or hazy vision
- Eye pain (only in certain types)
- Seeing halos around lights
But the most important thing is that glaucoma often doesn’t give any warning signs in its early stages
That is why we recommend regular eye exams after the age of forty.
Methods of diagnosis
At Dr. Hesham Gharieb’s clinic, we use precise techniques that include:
- Measuring eye pressure
- Examination of the drainage angle using a special lens (Gonioscopy)
- maging of the optic nerve and measuring its thickness using OCT technology
- Visual field test to determine the extent of impairment
Treatment plans
- Pressure-lowering eye drops: Used daily to maintain intraocular pressure within safe levels.
- Laser therapy: Such as SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) to open the drainage angles and improve fluid outflow
- Surgery: For advanced or treatment-resistant cases, including fluid drainage procedures like trabeculectomy, Deep Sclerectomy, GATT or valve implantation.
Every Treatment Plan takes into account: Disease stage, damage degree, Type of Glaucoma and patient response to his medication
